We're proud to introduce "Hazel", a bespoke scent which will be included as a limited capsule at this year's Coldiron Derby Fundraiser to benefit research for Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT). CMT is the most common inherited neurological disorder, yet most people have never heard of it. "Hazel" was created in honor of Hazel Coldiron, a whip-smart 10 year old who happens to be living with CMT. Hazel helped to design the scent profile - a mixture of mint, lavender, and grapefruit. She also hand-selected the iridescent vessel for this capsule. Tickets are still on sale for this year's fundraiser coinciding with the Kentucky Derby. Candles will be available for a minimum donation to the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association (CMTA) to fund research and programming for kids like Hazel. 100% of proceeds will be given to the CMTA. Hazel Coldiron is 10 years old and has Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT). CMT is a disease of the peripheral nerves that control muscles that can cause progressive loss of function and sensation in the hands, arms, legs, and feet. CMT is one of the most common inherited neurological disorders, but you've probably never heard of it. Our dear friends have been personally affected by this disorder. Christina and Dave fly Hazel around the country for treatments, surgeries, and meetings with geneticists. In partnership with the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association (CMTA) they sponsor camps for other children affected by CMT, and are also helping to fund research for a cure. The goal is to help kids like Hazel live a fulfilling life. Each year we help them fundraise for this cause by way of the best dang Kentucky Derby party in Nashville. This year's event will be hosted at Traveller's Rest where you'll find great food, great company, and great bourbon. Rare bottles will also be auctioned off at the event. This month we're debuting a new scent, Monica, in honor of Valarie's maternal grandmother. This candle's base is grapefruit with top notes of amyris and mangosteen. It provides a light, citrusy scent when lit and will give you all the happy feels. "Monica" is not Valarie's grandma's actual name. She was born in Havana in the 1930s as Fidelina. When she sought asylum in the United States she changed her name to Monica as part of her fresh start. One long-told family tale is that Fidelina decided on "Monica" after she met a woman by the same name who taught her basic English. Another version of the story is that she no longer liked the "Fidel" connotation associated with her birth name. Regardless of origin, deciding on a whole new moniker after immigrating to a new land is a complete baller move. You can find our newest candle this Saturday in Sylvan Park. Candle care tips: 1. To avoid tunneling, let your candle burn for 3 - 4 hours on first lighting. 2. Trim your wick to 1/4" before each lighting. 3. To prevent heat buildup, do not burn your candles for more than 4 hours at a time. 4. Always burn candles on a flat, fire resistant surface. 5. Never leave your candle alone when lit. 6. Keep lit candles away from flammable or combustible materials. And away from pets and young kiddos too! 7. Use a snuffer to put out the flame. 8.
